A senior Russian general has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The attack happened on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

The committee indicated that one possible explanation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Scene of the Incident

Personnel have been dispatched to the site, which is said to be in a south district of the city.

Accounts indicate the explosion happened in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

Pattern of Assaults

Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.

This latest event echoes other high-profile incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

Hostilities has been marked by clandestine operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
