Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
