Alleged Harasser Inquired: 'But Suppose I Am Madeleine?'
A woman accused with pursuing Kate McCann allegedly recorded her a voicemail message which asked: "suppose I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, twenty-four, who a jury heard has consistently declared she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and her co-defendant are on trial charged with pursuing Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court learned call records and data obtained from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently requesting Madeleine's mother for a DNA test over that period.
Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - at the age of three during a vacation in Portugal - is among the most widely reported investigations and is still unresolved.
'I Don't Want Money'
Another recorded message, presented in court, captured Ms Wandelt declaring: "I know I'm heavy and unattractive like Madeleine was, but I believe what I feel."
While one recording of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's voicemail said: "What if there is a tiny probability that I'm her? Then what? Wouldn't that be significant for you?"
"I don't want money, I maintain a living here in Poland, I simply desire to discover," she added.
The jury was informed that by means of emails, SMS messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, forwarded early photographs to her phone in a bid to show a likeness to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "recollections" from a early life with the McCanns.
The investigator, an investigator with the police force who collated the evidence, advised the court there "seemed to lack any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore communicated with acquaintances of the McCanns, as per the communication logs.
On that date, the father answered a call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "the wrong phone."
That day Ms Wandelt deposited a voicemail on Mrs McCann's voicemail saying "I will persist and I plan to establish my point."
The court learned Mrs Spragg developed a relationship via internet with Ms Wandelt before accompanying her on a visit to the McCanns' home in Leicestershire in December 2024.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had reached out through communication app to Mrs McCann to state the media had depicted Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she should be treated respectfully in the time before the appearance to that location, the county, in December 2024.
The court heard correspondence between the two individuals, in that autumn, discussing attempting to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her garbage or from utensils at a restaurant.
"We need to assert ourselves," the co-defendant told Ms Wandelt.
On the evening of the trip to their residence, the defendant dispatched a text which expressed: "We find ourselves sitting near the McCanns' residence with our lights out similar to detectives. I wanted to do this with someone else I didn't imagine I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The proceedings ongoing.
