Arne Slot Insists He Feels Secure and Has The Club's Backing Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's understandable for questions to be asked about his future following another convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth defeat in twelve matches, marking the club's worst streak after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I have got significant support from management,” Slot stated.
“It would be nice to change things and secure a win of course but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Club Management
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They assist to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me all the time each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I perceive the trust. However I've not talked to them since this match so far so we'll see.”
Recurring Problems and Squad Reaction
The manager lamented familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their European loss, specifically missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I'm telling that to all,” Jones stated.
“It’s just not good enough. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger internally. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the words.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side going through a phase of this nature with outcomes like these.”
Jones finished, “However we still have that badge on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we will always battle.”
“We will attempt to help the side return to the top, show everyone once more the values of this club and why it's known as the best team in the world.”
“At this moment, we’re in the shit and we have to turn it around.”
