England's Assistant Coach Shares The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Today, he is focused supporting Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from player to coach began as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his purpose.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he established a reputation for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. His players include legends including top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, they both test boundaries. Their strategies involve player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. He stresses the England collective and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

Barry describes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process for effective use in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. We have to spend time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play ought to embody everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we need to provide an approach that enables them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They understand tactics – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license with top honors, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed most of his staff while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. English football's governing body see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
