Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who ran away after the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area displayed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the residence was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the blast had taken place on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
