Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories After Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami scored 86 opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first basketball game after guard Terry Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the allegations.

But, the Miami team were focused as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.

Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."

Portland also secured their initial match after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."

Additional NBA Outcomes

In other games, Los Angeles Lakers player Doncic scored more than 40 scores for the second game in a row to start the season.

After scoring forty-three points in a season-opening loss to the Warriors, the European star put up forty-nine points - along with eleven rebounds and eight assists - as the Los Angeles defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 128 to 110.

Greek player Giannis Antetokounmpo also had a strong performance with 31 scores, twenty boards and 7 passes in the Bucks' 122 to 116 victory at the Toronto Raptors.

Rockets were beaten 115 to 111 by the Detroit Pistons despite 37 points from Durant, while Victor Wembanyama had twenty-nine scores, eleven boards and 9 rejections in the San Antonio Spurs' extra-time victory against the Pelicans.
