New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to support Cuomo in communities where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams remarked.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
