The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
