The Latest Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but includes a few notable changes:
- Every squad includes only 8 real players, with the rest made up of 32 bots.
- Activities done by real players grant full XP, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
- Just a pair of locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, this mode delivers on its title: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think it's a good idea, since it provides more options for players looking for different methods to enjoy the title. However, gaming history has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many Battlefield 6 fans are mad.
Player Reactions: From Fury to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," states one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. Meanwhile, in community forums, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this title," while someone else details all the issues they consider to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," adds another. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is perfect for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Criticisms and Community Feedback
All that said, players have valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of real players, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was promised to offer full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. Thus this new playlist feels like the player base meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should the development team has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and acting on feedback. Assignments being too difficult got fixed rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data indicates this recent mode isn't performing to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
