In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for placing in the top ten.
• Another $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the contract. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 soon, joins a young lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the United States, he slugged a tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's eventual championship win.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
